It’s been 82 days since the Horizon oil rig disaster in the Gulf Coast. The oil continues to gush from the bottom of the sea floor into the beautiful once clean Gulf Sea. Life goes on for most of us, but for the thousands of species of fish, invertebrates, birds, reptiles, and humans that call the Gulf Coast home, life as they know it is ending. Just like I can’t imagine the vast open galaxy of stars, black holes and planets in our night sky; I can’t fathom the estimated 86,000,000.000 gallons that have already gushed into the Sea. Several weeks ago there was news of a baby dolphin, rescued by people on the beach in Pensacola, it was covered in oil and died shortly after the rescue. The news hit me hard, dolphins swam their way into my heart when I was very young, I have a special fondness for them. I felt hopeless and paralyzed by grief. My artist heart put me in motion to express my love for the Sea, it’s creatures and the people who call it work and home.
